detour art – the book

“Detour Art takes us on a back-roads trip through the American countryside to drop in on some of our most natural artistic resources—the kind of people who create art for all kinds of reasons, but mostly just for themselves. It feels like a series of short (and delightful) encounters—with some fellow human beings who somehow discovered the secrets to becoming fully alive.”
- Roger Manley, photographer, curator, folklorist, and author of Signs and Wonders, Self-Made Worlds, and Weird Carolinas.

Detour Art – Outsider, Folk Art, and Visionary Environments Coast to Coast

”Detour Art – Outsider, Folk Art, and Visionary Environments Coast to Coast” highlights art and images by visionaries, untrained artists, and folk creators found along the back roads of America. Inspired by her work with the PBS show “Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations”, Kelly Ludwig, designer and photographer, has collected artwork and captured images from all regions of the country.

The exhibit includes work by Thornton Dial, Mose Tolliver, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Howard Finster, Minnie Adkins, Linvel and Lillian Barker, The Baltimore Glassman, Sultan Rogers, Mary T. Smith, and James Harold Jennings. Among the folk art environments documented are S. P. Dinsmoor’s The Garden of Eden, Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain, Kenny Hill’s Garden of Salvation, Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron, and The Grotto of the Redemption.
