Miles Minor Kellogg was an early recycler. Hailing from the Great Lakes area of Michigan, he moved to this Southern California town, bringing seafaring and building experience which he incorporated into now-historical landmark homes. He built a number of buildings along Highway 101, and in 1925 had salvaged timbers from the 1888 Moonlight Beach Dance Pavilion and Bathhouse, only to discover that they were too short for the requirements of a standard building ceiling height. Undaunted, Miles drew upon his shipbuilding experience and created these two 2-story homes, complete with curved lower walls with portholes. The SS Moonlight and the SS Encinitas still stands proudly, beckoning folks off of 101.
