The Great Staffs of David Philpot (and Intuit)

The rest of the day was spent and the great intuitive and outsider art organization of Intuit.  Amanda arranged for us to meet outsider artist, David Philpot.

David Philpot, carver
1940-
Chicago, IL
Guided by an unexplainable power, David Philpot began his staff carving one night in 1977 with the "liberation" of a tree in his neighborhood of Robert Taylor Homes.  Inspired by Moses in the Ten Commandments, David was drawn to creating a staff, after he realized there were many cane carvers out there.

His exquisitely detailed carvings and ornamentations are now highly collectable and sought after.  His generosity of spirit has also extended to the community with workshops for kids and lectures through Intuit.  David is great spirit and talented man.

The evening was filled with laughs and travel stories as we took the stage for a very informal "lecture."  Randy and the guys regaled the audience with road anecdotes and video clips from the show.  Chicagoan and RVRR fan, Van Delisle, brought us yogurt after reading my lament on facebook...the wonder of it all!

Thanks to Amanda Curtis, (hostess extraordinaire), Heather Holbus, Kevin Mulcahy and Cleo Wilson for their generosity and hospitality.  It was a great day (and dinner).
